A caricature is either a portrait that exaggerates or distorts the essence of a person or thing to create an easily identifiable visual likeness, or in literature, a description of a person using exaggeration of some characteristics and oversimplification of others.
Caricatures can be insulting or complimentary and can serve a political purpose or be drawn solely for entertainment. Caricatures of politicians are commonly used in editorial cartoons, while caricatures of movie stars are often found in entertainment magazines.
The term is derived from the Italian caricare: to charge or load. An early definition occurs in the English doctor Sir Thomas Browne's Christian Moral:
"Expose not thy self by four-footed manners unto monstrous draughts, and Caricatura representations."
When Men's faces are drawn with resemblance to some other Animals, the Italians call it, to be drawn in Caricatura.
Thus, the word "caricature" essentially means a "loaded portrait". According to caricature teacher Sam Viviano, the term refers only to depictions of real-life people, and not to cartoon fabrications of fictional characters, which do not possess objective sets of physiognomic features to draw upon for reference, or to anthropomorphic depictions of inanimate objects such as automobiles or coffee mugs. Walt Disney on the other hand, equated his animation to caricature, saying the hardest thing to do was find the caricature of an animal that worked best as a human-like character. Here is how you can draw one.

HaveTheRelationshipYouWant.com - 2Get out your pencils.
- 3Draw a small body with an outfit that the person you are drawing would wear when doing a hobby (e.g.ballet: a tutu).
- 4Draw a big head exaggerating the shape. For example, if the forehead of the subject is wide, emphasize this by drawing a wider than normal forehead. If it is narrow in comparison to the average forehead, draw a narrow forehead.
- 5Draw the hair. If the person has curly hair, make your drawing have really curly hair; if they have long hair, draw it down to their toes; etc.
- 6Draw the eyes in vibrant colours if the person has long eyelashes, do them huge.
- 7Draw the nose. The nose is pretty straightforward, big or small, lumpy or straight, etc.
- 8Draw the mouth. The lips are quite easy, plump, thin, straight etc. If the person has good teeth, exaggerate the straightness; if they have big teeth, give them buck teeth; if they have crazy teeth, cross them right over. Just gocrazy.
Alternate Method
- 1Get a subject and study it.

- 5Exaggerate and play with the features that you noticed before when you were studying the subject. don't think about realism, but still base your drawing on what you see in front of you.
- 6make sure to add small minute details such as the hair, freckles ,and teeth.
- 7Make sure to add elements to go around the head like a hat. This should all be drawn with smooth and confident lines.
- 8Make sure you compare your drawing to the subject and make corrections or alterations if needed.
- 9Show your drawing to the subject. Make sure you gauge the quality on their reaction.
